Howell Wins Lute Olson Award

Howell Wins Lute Olson Award

BOSTON (MA) -- NC State's Richard Howell earns the Lute Olson award national player of the week honors.

The 6-foot-8 senior helped 20th-ranked NC State improve to 3-0 in the ACC for the first time since the 1988-89 season with a pair of wins, including a victory over unbeaten and top-ranked Duke.

Against the Blue Devils, Howell recorded the 22nd double-double of his career with 18 rebounds (tied career-best in ACC play and one shy of his overall career-high) and 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting from the floor. He grabbed 14 of his game-high 18 rebounds in the second half.

Against the Yellow Jackets, Howell again was a force on the boards, registering a game-high 12 rebounds.

The Lute Olson Award is presented annually to the nation's top Division I player who has played at least two seasons with his respective team. Freshmen and first-year transfers can be named to the All-America team, but are not eligible to receive the Player of the Year honors.

The award is named in honor of coaching great Lute Olson, who won 780 games in 34 seasons, 24 of which were spent at the University of Arizona. During that stretch he led the Wildcats to 11 Pac-10 Conference titles, 23 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, four Final Four appearances and a National Championship in 1997.
