Is it too early to have a 2009 quarterback controversy? Nine days after Chris Johnson committed to Boston College, the Eagles added another quarterback prospect. | |||

Last Wednesday, after taking an official visit, Lakeland, Florida quarterback Dominique Davis gave his word to the Eagles. Davis had offers in line from schools like Middle Tennessee State, Buffalo, and Western Kentucky. But when a big program came knocking, Davis couldn’t resist. “I knew I really didn’t have a lot of big colleges recruiting me,” Davis said over the phone. “But I knew at least one major college was going to recruit me. [BC] called me about the middle of January, coach [Don] Yanowsky, and we were talking and talking, talking about the offense and all that, and I got really excited about them. I went on the visit, liked the visit, it felt like home, so I committed two days after I got home.” When Yanowsky first called Davis’ coach, Yanowsky asked for a highlight video to see if Davis’ skills matched what the new program wanted in a quarterback. “He called me and told me he liked my highlight tape,” Davis said. “He said he was going to offer me and that he was interested and we hit it off from there. “They’re looking for a mobile quarterback, someone who can run out of the pocket and make plays. And that’s basically all he saw on my highlight tape.” Davis met with the rest of the coaching staff – Jeff Jagodzinski and Jim Turner, among others – when he visited and discovered what they have planned for him when he gets to Chestnut Hill. “Same stuff I was doing in high school,” Davis said. “We do the same stuff, a spread-type offense. But, most of the time, instead of me being in shotgun, I’ll be under the center.” For the most part, that’s what they told Johnson when he visited. The two are similar players. Both are two-star recruits. Both would rather throw but possess the ability to scramble. Johnson is 6’2”, 205 pounds, and reports a 4.6 40. Davis is a little lankier at 6’3”, 185, but also reports a quick 40 time (4.8). Johnson’s ranked as the 76th-best QB prospect in the nation by Scout.com, Davis #88. It should be a good, friendly rivalry between the two when they’re ready to compete for the starting job. Apparently, their friendship has already been set in motion. “I talked to him,” Davis said. “He had committed but I hadn’t yet. I called him and I guess he thought I was being brought in as an athlete. But I told him I’d be playing quarterback.” With both Davis and Johnson seemingly locked into the quarterback position (neither have been asked to play elsewhere), there might have to be some roster shuffling next season. Davis is already prepared for that. “I’m redshirting,” he said distinctly. “That was my decision on that.” Davis outlined his plan for Signing Day on Wednesday. “I’m going to sign at 7, then I’m going to call [BC] and tell them. Then we’re going to have a little ceremony after that [with my family].” For the next few weeks, Davis can enjoy some non-football related activities to take his mind off the recruiting process. After his third-ranked basketball team’s season is over, it’s on to track. But come July, when Davis heads to BC for summer school, it’s nothing but football. “Strictly football, nothing else.” |
