Notes from Signing Day

Nick Schepis

"The following night we went to Cleveland with Nick Schepis' parents. And coach told Nick, ‘You can't sign on Signing Day unless you fax in the meatball recipe that we had that night.'"

Additional notes

-Jagodzinski did not want to fully comment yet on fifth-year players and transfers:

"We've got some kids that are in transition right now. We have a few kids that may transfer. I don't want to get into that right now, I want to talk about the guys that we just signed today."

-When asked about how much recruiting he did while still in Green Bay, Jagodzinski admitted he was doing a little, but first had to pass a test in order to do so. He mentioned that his background helped: Telling a player about working with Brett Favre and Michael Vick and helping to develop skill players like Donald Driver was a pretty good selling point, he said.

-Sort of a running joke with Jagodzinksi and Siravo was the idea of "soft commits" and "soft verbals." Having been away from the college scene for a while, those terms seemed silly to Jagodzinski and he poked fun at it occasionally during the press conference.

-Jagodzinski apparently is not a fan of the "experts" who place ratings on recruits. Coaches evaluate players in their own way and pay no attention to online player rankings. Many times, he said, players who are valued highly don't turn out that way and others who weren't make a big name for themselves. He gave Driver as an example of the latter.

-Siravo and Jagodzinski spoke about the best cooks among players' mothers whom they met during the recruiting process:

"It was a real close tie between [Nick] Schepis' mom and [Anthony] Castonzo's mom on the best cook," Jagodzinski said. "It was back-to-back nights."

"Anthony Castonzo is from Lake Zurich, Illinois," Siravo said. "His family owns a restaurant north of Chicago, it's called Oregano's. We had dinner there and then the following night we went to Cleveland with Nick Schepis' parents. And coach told Nick, ‘You can't sign on Signing Day unless you fax in the meatball recipe that we had that night."

-Tomorrow we'll bring you a positional breakdown. Siravo, who didn't say much during the press conference, had a lot to say afterwards about the early stages of his job and had some additional info on specific recruits. We'll pass quotes from him in tomorrow's breakdown.
