Boston College has reached the magic number of six wins with their win of Central Michigan on Saturday. That means they are officially bowl eligible for the eleventh straight season. Those are just some of the numbers of significance that deserve attention after last Saturday’s victory.
Five
With 11 tackles yesterday
Luke Kuechly
now has five straight games with double-digit tackles. For good measure he added a 28-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Kuechly is currently sixth in the nation with 94 tackles (first among freshman).
313
In the last two games senior captain
Rich Gunnell
has caught 18 passes for 313 yards and two scores. He has a chance to become the most prolific receiver in BC history. He is currently 30 receptions and 237 yards away from becoming the all time leader in receptions and receiving yards at BC.
267
Steve Aponavicus has become BC’s all-time leader in points. He broke the record of 262 previously set by Brian Lowe on his third PAT attempt of the game in the third quarter.
Three
Central Michigan
quarterback
Dan LeFevour
had entered the game fifth in the country in passing completion percentage yet the senior quarterback was held to just three completions in the second half and finished the day 20-34 passing.
136
Montel Harris
had yet another strong showing gaining 136 yards on the ground and scoring twice. He now has 13 touchdowns on the year. The Eagles are 9-0 when Harris rushes for 100 or more yards.
Eight
It was a battle of field position early in the game as BC and Central Michigan combined for eight consecutive punts. It was a defensive struggle early until both teams got on the board late in the second quarter.
159
David Shinskie finished 18-28 for 262 yards and a score. In the third quarter alone he was 7-of-9 for 159 yards including a 41-yard strike to Rich Gunnell.
34,000
The announced attendance was 34,000 although the stadium never looked more than two-thirds full. It’s hard to blame BC for this though as the 3:30 start on Halloween likely kept most families from attending. There were several buses full of high school football teams arrive which is nice to see. There were plenty of Halloween costumes to be seen including some nice Spaziani impersonators.
Two
Shinskie missed two wide-open receivers that would have resulted in big plays, most likely touchdowns. BC was lucky that these plays did not come back to haunt them. In the future BC will have to capitalize on these opportunities. It will be important for Shinskie to get in sync with his receivers and get the timing down on deep passes.
Zero
Perhaps the most important number of the day,
Boston College
had no turnovers in the game. This was especially important after last week’s five-turnover debacle that cost them the game.
